WARNING: People
using this site who have experienced intimate violence, and those who are new to the internet,
should NEVER give out private information over
the internet. This includes:
Your real name
Your social security number
Your credit card numbers
Your telephone number
Your address (home or work)
If you or your children have been abused and you are still in danger of violence
from the perpetrator, you should not even enter an email address where
you can be reached unless you are in a secure space (a shelter,
a women's resource center, a public library). Do not give the email address of a friend
or a family member because you might put them in harm's way. To open a free email
account,
click here. Once you register, go to the "Privacy Statement" and indicate
that you do not want to receive solicitations.
If you are not in danger of personal harm, and are an
experienced internet user, you can reduce the chances of identity theft
by following these guidelines:
-
Do not transfer personal information unless you
initiated the contact. In other words, if you receive an email message
from what appears to be a business or group with whom you have an
account, and they ask you for your social security or an account number,
do NOT provide that information. Instead, you contact them and ask if
they requested information. You will find that they did NOT send the
email.
-
If you are transmitting personal information,
look for an "s" at the end of "http(s)" which indicates the site is
secure.
