Young Women and Money
Make a Plan to Afford Your Dream
First Piece
Dream Your Future

Chances are your dream of the future involves having enough money to do what you want to do. Financial independence is very important if you want to be in charge of your future. Financial independence means that you have control of enough money to meet your own needs. You do not have to depend on someone else to pay your rent, buy your food, and or help with your transportation. Having your own money means that you can pursue your dream without asking someone else’s permission. Financial independence gives you power over your own life!

If your dream involves going to a college that has a lot of applicants, but only takes a limited number of students, you need to think about making yourself "marketable" from the time you enter high school. Whenever you can qualify, take honors classes. Participate in service projects and extra-curricular activities. Volunteer at non-profits like hospitals or a special-needs camp, or look for interesting summer jobs or internships. If you find something you feel passionate about, learn as much about it as you possibly can (in other words, become an expert in it).
